Las Salinas, Zapata, Cuba
I am luckily enough to visit Cuba most years. Las Salinas has become a happy hunting ground. In fact more like a playground. For Las Salinas is an immense area of interconnecting shallow water lagoons. They are home to thousands of bonefish, which have become one of my favourite quarries.
It is all too easy to fall in love with bonefishing. The weather, the warm clear water, the endlessly changing light all create a mood of enchantment. In the intensely focused searching for the fish, hours pass unnoticed as you stare into the mosaic of flickering light and shadow. Hunting, and finding, bonefish is half the fun.
The other half is the fight. Bonefish in shallow water head straight for the horizon. Keep your fingers and knuckles well clear of the reel, if you don't want to be gouged and bruised hands! Big bone's will take a lot of line and may make 3 long runs before tiring. The speed and power of the fish is exhilarating and, at times, a little daunting. Be warned, if you haven't done it, bonefishing is addictive.
